8 March, at the Ipoh Parade to show my support in the
PWW programme. A definate "No To Violence Against
Women".
IWD celebration at Gurney Plaza in Penang on 7 March.
This year I was very lucky indeed to join in the IWD celebration both in Penang and Ipoh. I had wanted to meet the Penang women leaders and this was an opportunity to do so. The event was organised by the Penang State Government. This year's theme is, " Women and Man United To Stop Violence Against Women and Girls."
On 7 March, at the Gurney Plaza we were entertained by the Ombak ombak dancers performing a creative dance which was meaningful. It was on the struggles of women in the search of their rights and freedom.
I enjoyed the talks as well especially from Lim Kah Cheng. There were booths selling items made by women from associations and single mother clubs. The health check section was the most popular. I took my test and discovered I had to go down in weight. This I had to take it seriously for the sake of own health.
Cheng Kooi from WCC told me that WCC booth will be open the next day. Too bad I would not be around to help. She said 21 March was the actually WCC programme which would be held in Disted College. My beloved mum-in-law passed away that morning in Taiping.
Well the next day , 8 March was IWD actually and I made my way to Ipoh Parade to meet my PWW ( Perak Women For Women ) members. I stayed around until 4.30pm. It was the first meeting with Dr Sharifah Halimah, PWW President herself and other committee members.
I was very impressed with the effort put in by the committee in organizing the event. The booths drew a huge crowd and there was palm-printing to support, "Say No To Violence Against Women" campaign.
I do hope the shoppers who had taken the phamplets on child abuse, sexual harrasment, domestic violence do read them and pass them on so that the message is conveyed to as many as possible.
There was a line dance performance by Ipoh ladies. The talk by image consultant, Mr Carmen was very interesting. Though PWW had been formed for 5 years, it is definately doing a good job and I hope it will expand its activites outside Ipoh. It surely needs the support from all corners of Perak to do so.
As for my part,I'll do my best to educate my school kids so that they will help stop violence against women and children or be aware of this issue at least. Not only that, the town folks over here have to be aware about women rights and domestic violence that is arising.
