It was by sheer good luck that Sofea Hana Bte Zafrullah , my pupil from Year 5 Bestari was chosen to replace another participant from Trong Zone.  She had very little time to prepare for the competition but through the continuous spelling tests in class and being an avid reader herself, Sofea had proven her spelling capabilities well to win the third place in the Larut Matang & Selama Spelling Competition held in SK Selama on Saturday the 6th Oct.

It is an oral spelling competition which really tested the pupils' spelling capabilities and vocabulary power.  Am inspired by her wonderful achievement as she is the first pupil who has taken part in a district English competition since I have been transferred to SK Bendang Siam.  There are many more English competitions to look forward to as I am eager to give these  children more opportunities and expose them so that they will gain more confidence and improve their English.

For two weeks I was busy preparing the word lists for the Taiping, Kamunting and Selama Zones and finally for the district level.  I find it necessary to set a good standard to follow and ensured that the rules are followed.  I was quite disappointed that the other three zones did not have it done this way.

I would like to thank my team members especially Franchise and Mazinim  who had helped me prepare the word lists and also all the teachers involved in organising the district level competition or the zone level competitions.

I appreciate the honour and trust given to me by the Larut Matang & Selama District Office to handle the competitions as the technical official for English activities for primary schools in the district.  I promised to do my best and I did but work started only after the UPSR ended.  Preparing the Year 6 pupils for their examination was stressful indeed.

I am very disappointed that there were no competitions at the state or national level this year.  I only wished KPM would not fail to continue this competition for the pupils as they should have the funds to run it in all states.

At the end of the day, pupils must be motivated to learn English, to read English materials and be more confident in using the language .  It is very difficult to get rid of their shyness especially my Malay pupils but with some fun learning it will be easier.

Am going to be busy preparing for the English Day Programme in SK Bendang Siam .   Hopefully, the activities we plan will be well carried out and the pupils enjoy themselves on that day.
