Here's wishing all who are celebrating Christmas, "Merry Christmas" and "Happy New Year" to everyone. May there be peace in every home and happiness always.
As I am writing, my thoughts are for those unfortunate people especially women and children who are abused and living in fear and uncertainty.
Before, I didn't like to speak up on ill-treatment, domestic violence, abuse, and people's negative attitudes in my blog but I feel that these are the issues that are close to me and what I have been fighting against for quite some time so I have no fear to speak up now.
Just as many Christians are celebrating Christmas tonight, I learnt that a mother and her children are unhappy because of the lady's drunkard and irresponsible husband who is causing misery at home. They are supposed to celebrate Christmas at least peacefully .I hope domestic violence will get full attention from everyone especially the authorities and harsh punishments be imposed on the culprits.
We must be willing to help the victims especially children who suffer the most. They too become violent themselves and live in trauma. Many people including close relatives or the next-door neighbours will not do anything to help because they regard it as family matters and they wouldn't like to interfere. Some tried to help but end up saying they are tired and sick of them as the problems are never ending. Some would say if you help them today, the next day you can see the couple holding hands even so they say it is no point helping them.
Well, I learnt that some ladies like her have to keep on pretending. They have to be nice to their irresponsible husbands so that they will be able to get some money from them for buying the provisions in the house to feed the children. Some ladies got to 'steal' from their husbands' wallets. You can call it survival skills. What if the men do not provide enough or pretend not to give the money? Such husbands would call their wives 'thieves'. What do they call themselves , I wonder? Usually, it is the case of terrible husbands who are the worst examples to their kids who lose respect for them. Some people point fingers at the women and even support the guys. My goodness! Can't people see things straight and shut their mouths if they can't lend a helping hand.
What to do with irresponsible and heartless husbands who care only about drinking and wouldn't look for a better job to support their family? Why must there be so much suffering and when will all this mental torture come to an end? Many women still don't know that they are being protected by the law and IPO or Interim Protection Order which could be served to the husband who caused her physical injury or too much mental torture. Once the lady is protected, her husband will be arrested if he batters her again and he will be charged as domestic violence is a crime.
We must let every man and lady know about this and victims should not to be afraid any longer. Just go to the police station to make a police report and the hospital next. They should be given protection. After that, the welfare officer would be contacted to help the victim. Members from N.G.O. like the Women Crisis Centre in Penang (www.wccpenang.org/wcc/ )do help these unfortunate victims. All parties should give full cooperation to help overcome these problems as we cannot work alone. Do not waste time as help may reach a DVA victim too late. You will see only a dead corpse being brought out from the house of the person whom you are supposed to help.
More seminars and talks on sexual harrasment, domestic violence and child abuse should be organised and more crisis centres should be set up even in rural areas to reach out to these
unfortunate people.
I hope this woman whom I know and is helping now will have a brighter future with her children. I will not just stand and stare and see her suffer alone. No, not like some people who do the opposite. There are those who love to talk about other's misery and laugh at them. We must remember, nothing is permanent and life is not a bed of roses. The Bukit Antarabangsa Disaster and tsunami had taught us many good lessons. Life is uncertain and anything can happen to us and our family. So each and everyone must be ready to face life's challenges and unforseen circumstances.
To my friend, my inspirational words do cheer her up and injects the spirit of courage, confidence and hope in her. Keep on smiling my friend, be patient and more optimistic. I am glad to see the great change in her after some effective counseling. I promise to support her until she gets out of this dark tunnel of her life.
In another case,I was very touched when many town folks and friends came together to save a mentally ill lady. I cried and thought for days thinking of her when I got to know her problem. I was wondering how to help her at first and I am glad I started the ball rolling. Have you seen mentally-ill ladies wandering the streets? You must guess what will happen to them especially at night? Heartless people are everywhere waiting for the opportunity to harm them and others although they know about it wouldn't like to interfere to help the poor ladies. Many are afraid to do so or don't know what to do.
With the help of the town folks and kind and generous friends we managed to put this lady safely in a special home so that she will recover hopefully. Before, I didn't know much about these homes and how to apply to enter . I haven't even visited a psychiatric ward before this and talked to mentally-ill people before but now it's different. It is a good experience and I hope the public will accept these people once they are back to society after rehabilitation.
What shocked me was seeing many young and pretty ladies in one of these homes and a number of young men in a psychiatric ward in a hospital. The cause of mental illness in most cases is the taking of esctasy pills, inhaling 'gum' or 'glue', stress in work places, boy friend or social problems and debts. These patients are too many and majority of them are left at home. They become worse and worse. Some are in and out of mental institutions all the time.
N.G.O. run mental rehabilitation homes are expensive and the government ones are not enough and difficult to get in. More half-way homes need to be built in each state and money should not be spent on 'white elephant ' or extravagant projects . The Malaysian government should focus on rehabilitation of these mentally ill citizens in the hope that they will be able to return to society and benefit their families, people and country. If not, it is a great waste to the nation. I am talking about thousands who are involved including professionals such as teachers, doctors, undergraduates accountants etc.etc. More awareness and educational campaigns should be conducted seriously on mental illness just as for HIV / AIDS or drug abuse.
There is still no monthly monetary aid from the government for mentally-ill patients as they are not regarded as handicapped. So you can imagine how they suffer when they do not have enough money to buy basic daily neccessities such as food and clothings. In their condition they cannot be employed. Hope some actions can be taken to help them as fast as possible.
My friends and the town folks contributed financially to support the particular mentally ill lady I mentioned earlier. The love for this pretty lady and the hope to see her get well is burning in us. It proved that there are still some nice people around who care. Yet, there is no guarantee whether the lady will recover totally or anything can happen but at least we know she is in a safe place where the rehabilitation includes a number of activities and counseling sessions.
We shouldn't be afraid to help. Yes, we meet many challenges such as getting scolded by the person's family members, her boy friend etc. However, I believe one's sincere desire to help her will make things turn out well in the end. Just a little time to spare and sacrifice will mean a lot to other people who need our help and support. We ourselves must be strong inside.
There are many unfortunate people out there, so we must reach out to them regardless of skin colour or differences. Usually, this starts if a small group of people with the same interests come together and there is someone to lead a good mission.
I do hope 2009, will be a brighter year for everyone in the world. I wish there is better understanding among people especially among Malaysians. It is sad to see people being more divided just because of different beliefs may it be political or religious. If everyone has the interests of others in his or her heart and is sincere in whatever one does, the world would be a better place to live in. So, let us all try our best to tolerate and respect one another.
I do hope all the leaders whether they are heads of institutions or elected by the people into government will serve the people and country sincerely, diligently and responsibly. Let there be no more violence, harsh and sensitive remarks, sexist remarks made in public or worse still used during a parliament proceeding. Leaders should be more professional and always discuss and negotiate together in a peaceful manner as the public are focussing on them and they want to see results not just plain talk and empty promises.

Let us not be a laughing stock to the young ones by making silly mistakes over and over again.
I hope the younger generation will benefit from our actions and decisions we make today.
So, let us join hands together to work for peace, fairness and a more beautiful environment to live in. Keep on smiling. Merry Christmas & A Very Happy New Year.
