"HAPPY TEACHER'S DAY" I wish all teachers including myself. Today, 16 May, I spent with four of my boys who are going to participate in the RHB-NST Spell-It-Right Challenge tomorrow at Taiping Sentral. What I've done today is just giving these rural pupils an opportunity to join others in town confidently.
Teaching English is an uphill task and it all depends on the teachers to motivate the pupils to love to learn and speak English. Participating in contests is just a way to help them and whether they win or lose is another matter but it is a good start. Well, having to make lots of sacrifice is part of our duties as a teacher. Perhaps, it comes with our compassion as we work with our pupils or students, to understand them and listen to them at times.
Teacher's Day for teachers is a day for reflection on ourselves to realise how much we still haven't done and need to do in our life. Sometimes we have done so much but we don't get appreciated, instead there are complains and criticisms, never mind. Sometimes we don't receive as many gifts as we expected, that's okay. Sometimes, we are not nominated as the "Most Popular Teacher" in school, we should not get jealous of others. Sometimes things don't go well and we understand these are all the challenges we are facing. As long as we ourselves know best who we are, our own potential and most importantly that we are on the right track, everything is going to be fine.
Having taught pupils for thirty years, it is indeed a tiring job. A teacher's work never ends. From my early teaching years till now, the love for teaching is still blooming for me. New ideas keep on coming . Teachers too must be computer savy nowadays despite their age. Like me, the crave for ICT knowledge is there and it keeps me exploring and sharing. My hope is that my pupils in the classes now will be more attentive, obedient and grow into successful , disciplined and caring adults one day.
As a good teacher, it is good that we can serve the society or our local community well. What is the use of our knowledge if we are not able to help the society. It's important to join in the beneficial activities around us and for some of us who can lead, to be able to lead others. Yet, when we are involved in social activities , let us not forget our core business, that is teaching the pupils or students in school.
Year after year,batches of pupils leave school and go their own way. However, as their former teacher I feel touched as I get a call from them, a New Year Day card or a wedding invitation. My dream was to get my school connected so we can reach out to our ex pupils as well and it is indeed working fine! Through our skselama.net portal we will be reaching out to more of them.
Well, some friends asked me why I'm not tired of doing so many things? It's simple. Just continue doing the things you think is right and should be done. Sometimes. if we don't do it who else will? Sometimes, others out there are just waiting for someone to start.
We'll at over 50 already, guess we can do what is best and not regret. Time flies and there is no turning backwards. Let us feel young at heart.
On this beautiful Teacher's Day, here's wishing all teachers a very lovely Teacher's Day. Thanks to all my dear friends, pupils and ex-pupils who have sent me wonderful messages, cards and poems. All of you have made my life meaningful.
May everyone enjoy happiness, peace and good health always!
Here's a beautiful poem that inspires me:
A Teacher's Prayer by Jill Wolf
I want to teach my students more
than lessons in a book;
I want to teach them deeper things
that people overlook
The value of a rose in bloom,
its use and beauty, too,
A sense of curiosity to discover what is true;
How to think and how to choose
the right above the wrong,
How to live and learn each day
and grow up to be strong;
To teach them always how to gain
in wisdom and in grace,
So they will someday make the world
a brighter, better place.
Lord, let me be a friend and guide
to give these minds a start
Upon their way down life's long road,
then I'll have done my part.
